The idea of pickup trucks to have hybrid electric variants might seem too far-fetched for many but not for GMC. This is because several reports hold that the company is working on a new model dubbed as 2018 GMC Sierra Hybrid.
While most pickup trucks are thirst quenchers, the new 2018 generation Sierra Hybrid is expected to excel in fuel economy. The company hasn’t disclosed any information regarding this upcoming model. But that doesn’t stop car experts from putting out possible predictions.
2018 GMC Sierra Hybrid – Exterior Upgrade
The exterior body of 2018 GMC Sierra Hybrid will be based on the standard GMC Sierra. This suggests that besides being conservative in fuel consumption, 2018 Sierra Hybrid will wear the iconic muscular body profile.
In other words, buyers will get the same compelling nature of GMC pickup trucks, in addition to innovative hybrid technology. As speculated by experts, 2018 Sierra Hybrid will not feature significant changes as the installation of hybrid powertrain already adds up the cost.
This upcoming hybrid pickup truck could ride on the same 18-inch polished aluminum alloy wheels. Additional exterior accessories will include a spray-on bed liner, rear window defogger, IntelliBeam headlights, tonneau cover, wheel locks and several others.
The interior cabin of this new GMC Sierra Hybrid could see some improvements. Although the features in this cabin are going to vary according to trims, several standard features like upholstery can be updated.
As the current model incorporates a single-zone air conditioning, 2018 variant could receive a dual-zone upgrade. Other features in this cabin include driver information center, cruise control, all-weather floor mats, manual tilt steering column and remote keyless entry.
Drivetrain and Fuel Consumption
2018 GMC Sierra Hybrid will make use of not just 1 but 2 different powertrains. An electric motor will be backed by a 4.3-liter V6 engine to make improvements in fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the makers will use a front wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission system.
Unlike the previous GMC Sierra Hybrid, the new model might use a larger battery instead of the old 0.45 kWh Li-Ion unit. This old battery pack is borrowed from Chevy Malibu hybrid as it comprises 24 individual lithium-ion cells. It has been designed to deliver 15kW of power to the motor. A liquid-cooled power inverter with motor-control software will also be used.
Apart from an innovative hybrid drivetrain, this upcoming Sierra Hybrid will also incorporate several safety features. Some of these include a tire-pressure monitoring system, safety alert seats, low speed forward automatic braking, rear vision camera, lane keeping assist and forward collision warning system.
Price and Launch Date
Although it hasn’t been confirmed, this 2018 GMC Sierra Hybrid could come with a starting price of around $42,040. Its price is also going to vary according to trims and packages. As far as its availability is concerned, this new Sierra Hybrid pickup truck might hit the dealerships in 2017’s last quarters or probably during the early onset of 2018.
