It’s not just Tesla or BMW chasing efficient performance for HEV and PHEVs; Jaguar is in this game as well. The British automakers are reported to be working on its new 2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In, a move set to make a prominent mark in the hybrid segment.
The most interesting bit is that several spy shots of this model have come up which showcase radical exterior changes. That being said, this new Jaguar XE Plug-In is also reported to bring forth a revamped drivetrain.
2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In Exterior
From what the spy shots hold, the test model wears a more premium styling than the standard XE. Upon closer inspection, 2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In carries several new offerings including the small ‘E’ badge on a light-blue background.
Its front fascia looks more pronounced as the headlights stretch towards the front fenders. Modifications also include new aerodynamics creases in the hood which continue till the windscreen.
The rear bumper holds an oblong plastic trim that looks intentionally popped off. Experts predict that this plastic section could be a makeshift port to plug in the power cord.
2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In – Interior
There are high chances that this electrified Jaguar could sport a next generation styling in its interior cabin. This would include the driver’s gauge cluster to incorporate a multi-functional display which shows every hybrid drivetrain information with real time updates.
Like all standard Jaguar XE, the hybrid model will get an oblong center console that cross divides the front seats and extends towards the rear seat. Safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Vehicle Monitoring and Multi-stage bags should come as standard.
Speculations for Powertrain
Although several rumors had previously contradicted that there will be no hybrid powertrain, spy shots reveal the model wearing an FEV (Full Electric Vehicle) ID. 2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In can use a 2.0-liter diesel engine which will be combined with a 35 kW (46 HP) electric motor.
According to what experts predict, the powertrain’s electric motor will be embedded into the transmission system; like that of Range Rover Sport diesel hybrid. With some minor tunings, the gasoline engine’s sole output could stay close to 280 lb-ft of torque and 161 HP of power.
These figures will be escalated by the electric motor to produce final outputs as 210 HP and 197 lb-ft. Fuel economy will increase to 47 mpg city, 42 mpg highway and 55 mpg combined.
Competition, Price and Availability
Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-In Hybrid and BMW ActiveHybrid 3 are joining the competition with 2018 Jaguar XE Plug-In Hybrid on its release. Given an array of changes, 2018 Jaguar XE Diesel, Plug-In should carry along a price tag around the $50,000 mark and hit the dealerships by the end of 2017.
