2018 Kia Niro Hybrid – Powertrain, Battery and MPG

With competition rising from Nissan Juke, Fiat 500X and Honda HR-V, all pushing for hybrid powertrains and impressive EPAs, Kia is unlikely to stand behind in this market. To improve on its previous figures and performance marks, the automaker may soon roll out its new 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid. The price tag and release dates are still unknown; however, a few of its specs can be fished out.

2018 Kia Niro Hybrid External and Internal design

Hardly any changes from Kia in this section. 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid will continue to sport the same design, both in its outer body and interior cabin. It will retain its previous platform, and all its dimensions will remain unchanged. Kia, however, claims that its new SUV may receive a slight boost in its cargo hold volume.

Headlights will continue to sport a similar structure, and front grille will have the same mesh design. Expect a few changes in its body lines to mark the 2018 model. As for its interiors, the dash will retain the same infotainment system, and seats will come with standard heating features. However, Kia may add a few color options with optional roof rails.

Powertrain of 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid

The South Koreans had launched its 2017 version with a vision to reach an EPA of 50 mpg. With its 2018 Niro, the automakers might cross it. Like its previous model, Kia’s next Niro may continue to house a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, a 2.6-liter unit is also a possibility. The gasoline part of this hybrid powertrain is same as that found in Kia Optima and Hyundai Veloster.

Combined with the gasoline unit is what Kia’s 43 HP electric motor, will look to be! Power will come from a lithium-ion battery set. Both will work in parallel to reach an EPA set by Kia. The electric motor will be placed right at the center of the SUV’s floor delivering power directly to its wheels.

The total output of this powertrain will be around 146 HP. Torque figures will stand at around 195 lb-ft. A 6-speed automatic DCT system will be mated with the overall powertrain. Speculations are also on air that Kia may go all-out electric with its new Niro; however, no official word is yet available.

To get that hybrid feeling going, Kai claims to install an on-screen monitoring system in its new 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid. This will display information about the hybrid powertrain status which includes battery charge levels, fuel economy statistics and energy distribution.

No other information about its speed or acceleration is yet available. If Kia decides to continue this powertrain, expect similar figures as the predecessors. However, if the electric motor’s power capacity is boosted, acceleration figures may get a hit due to increased dead weight.

Safety and Technology

Apart from excelling in EPA figures, Kia Niro is also impressive when it comes to safety installations. The South Koreans promise 4-wheel disc brakes in its new 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid as well. This will be combined with an anti-lock braking system. Apart from this, expect the following to be available as standard:

  • Rear traffic alert system.
  • Lane-departure warning system.
  • Adaptive cruise control.
  • Blind spot monitoring system.

2018 Kia Niro Hybrid may also sport tire pressure monitoring system, automatic parking and voice-activated navigation system, but all these may come as an option.
